It’s Earth Month, and in a moment when leaders are rolling back sustainability initiatives and dismantling social safety nets, we will continue the fight toward a greener, more equitable food system – community by community, and meal by meal, with food that is healthier for us and the planet.
The climate crisis affects us all, but it disproportionately impacts marginalized communities. With your generous support, Support+Feed continues to address the increasing, pressing need to provide nutritious meals, produce, and pantry items to families while simultaneously working towards mitigating the climate crisis. Community activations will occur throughout the month in all of our 11 US anchor cities.
A few of Support+Feed Earth Month events include:
Los Angeles:
In Echo Park, we were a part of a Spring Wellness Fair hosted by Project Access, featuring cooking demonstrations focused on affordable, environmentally friendly meals, alongside children’s activities. In South LA, we’re supporting 400 families with produce and grocery items in conjunction with Farmlink and the Social Justice Learning Institute. In Bell Gardens, our regular free farmers market features rescued produce in collaboration with Food Forward, alongside pantry items, and educational activations. And in Altadena, we’re continuing to provide relief in response to the LA fires, by providing rescued produce and hot plant-based meals, along with a composting demonstration. And this is just a sample of our LA programming this month!
Minneapolis:
On Earth Day, we’re raising awareness about plant-based food for health, equity, and for the environment with R. Roots Garden, as part of their Garden Season Environmental Awareness Program. A group of growers are helping to prepare garden beds to share with neighbors in the community, particularly those that need access to fresh food and can’t leave their homes.
New York City:
As part of our extensive programming in NYC this month, we’ll be highlighting the connection between our plate and the planet to an audience of elementary school students and their families at PS 20 on the Lower East Side, and distributing hot meals to patients and families at Betances Health Center. Sharing Excess will be providing rescued produce for our families at both events.
We’re also excited to announce that Maggie will be bringing accessible, approachable climate solutions to public media starting next fall, via her new series, Climate Kitchen, produced by Support+Feed in partnership with Atlas Films and WETA. Read more about it here.
Thank you for being part of the solution this Earth Month, and every month. We couldn’t do it without you.
