INGREDIENTS

  • 4 large apples
  • 1 cup (237 ml) of water
  • ¼ cup (50 g) of sugar, to taste
  • ½ tsp of ground cinnamon

RECIPE

Instructions

  1. Peel, core, and chop apples.
  2. Add the apples to a covered saucepan along with ¾ cup of the water and cook over medium heat.
  3. Stir regularly to avoid the apples at the bottom burning and cook for about 15-20 minutes until the apples are soft. If needed, add additional water to keep it saucy.
  4. Add most of the sugar and mix, setting some aside if needed after you taste it.
  5. Remove from heat and carefully take out a little of the sauce to cool and try for sweetness. If needed, add the rest of the sugar.
  6. Mash the sauce with a potato masher to the desired texture or blend the sauce with an immersion or standard blender once cooled.

Chef’s Notes

  • Some apples are sweeter- Gala, Fuji, and Honeycrisp vs more tart- Granny Smith and Braeburn, so you can vary the amount of sweetener or skip it altogether!
  • You can also make applesauce in a slow cooker or pressure cooker which will create a smooth sauce with less mashing and no blending.
  • Reuse a glass jar to store your applesauce, they’re perfect for this recipe!
  • Make a big batch and store it in the fridge or freezer.
