Community Spotlight: New York City

Support+Feed was born in Los Angeles, but it quickly became clear that our model of community support and engagement was urgently needed beyond Southern California. One of our earliest and most dedicated volunteers was NY-based, so she got to work on building out an operation there, despite a busy day job as a media executive. Today, you may know her as Support+Feed’s executive director, Allison Kingsley!

Not surprisingly, NYC is now one of our busiest markets. To give you a sense of our current scale there, we want to share a sampling of our activations in the area last month, plus an update on our expanding team:

Harlem Grown – Community Earth Day Celebration

Support+Feed was proud to participate in Harlem Grown’s Community Earth Day Celebration by providing nourishing plant-based bites and educational resources for families and community members.

Through our partnership with Uptown Veg—one of our newest restaurant collaborators—we offered samples of lentil and kale patties, as well as falafel balls, giving attendees a taste of healthy, plant-based options rooted in cultural flavor. We also provided a variety of educational resources designed to engage guests of all ages.

King of Kings (Queens, NY) – Cooking Demo for Seniors

Support+Feed, in collaboration with one of our New York restaurant partners, The Nourish Spot, hosted a plant-based cooking demonstration for residents at the Far Rockaway site of the King of Kings Foundation.

Upon arrival, participants were welcomed with samples of fresh smoothies and plant-based wrap pinwheels. Dawn and Jade from The Nourish Spot then led an engaging cooking demo, showing attendees how to recreate the nourishing dishes at home using simple, accessible ingredients.

PS20 (Lower East Side) – Earth Week Celebration & Farmers Market

We partnered with longtime NYC collaborator PS20 to celebrate Earth Week through a day of engaging, educational, and nourishing activities for students, teachers, and the local community.

During student lunch periods, we offered samples of plant-based empanadas, giving students the opportunity to try a new, sustainable food option. Chef Danny Carabano of VSpot joined us to speak about the preparation process and ingredients, helping students understand how delicious and accessible plant-based meals can be.

Alongside the PS20 Green Club, we hosted a mini farmers market featuring fresh produce provided with support from Sharing Excess, as well as hot, restaurant-quality plant-based meals from VSpot. Educational coloring sheets were available for students to enjoy onsite or take home.

NYC Mayors Office on Food Policy – Carbon Challenge Anniversary Event

Support+Feed joined the NYC Mayors Office to celebrate their Plant-Powered Carbon Challenge, an ambitious food and climate initiative for organizations to build a healthier and more sustainable food system in NYC.  The event was a celebration of the second cohort of Carbon Challenge signatories across many different sectors: athletic competitions, universities, financial institutions, healthcare systems, restaurants, and hospitality groups that have made the commitment to draw down food-based emissions through delicious, plant-powered food.

Allison was invited to speak about Support+Feed’s work in New York and nationally, sharing our mission to create positive change by promoting plant-based eating as a tool for sustainability.

Introducing Support+Feed’s new Partnership and Program Specialist, Rowan Nasr!

And finally, none of these community-enriching moments would’ve been possible without the efforts of our dynamic new Partnership and Program Specialist, Rowan Nasr, who recently relocated to NYC from LA and immediately put her considerable talents and passion to work in support of our mission. Please join us in welcoming Rowan to the Support+Feed family.
